Profibus to DeviceNet Gateway (p/n AB7605)

Version 2.03 Now Available (Feb. 2010)

The BridgeWay  PROFIBUS to DeviceNet Gateway provides connectivity between a PROFIBUS-DP network and a DeviceNet network.  This compact, DIN rail-mountable device solves a mission critical problem: connecting existing or newly installed DeviceNet™ networks to Profibus DP-Master PLCs, Scanners, HMI's or DCS's. It’s the proven choice to monitor and control devices on a DeviceNet network from any Profibus-DP Master.

The gateway operates as a PROFIBUS-DP Slave, allowing a PROFIBUS-DP Master to read and/or write data from / to up to 63 DeviceNet Slave devices. The DeviceNet side of the gateway is a full DeviceNet Master and I/O Scanner, complete with the Automatic Device Replacement (ADR) feature. ADR allows the gateway to automatically restore configuration data to a device, once a failed device has been replaced on the DeviceNet network. As a result, it can eliminate the additional cost of PLC-based DeviceNet scanners, while adding the benefit of connectivity to your DeviceNet networks throughout the plant.  The AB7605 can also operate as a DeviceNet Slave.

Configuration of the gateway is simple using Rockwell Software’s RSNetWorx™ for DeviceNet or NetTool-DN-D (NetTool is available from Pyramid Solutions). Configuration consists of building a scan list of the target devices on your DeviceNet network, which creates the resulting input/output data that will be mapped into PROFIBUS-DP I/O data.

Version 2.03 & 2.02 Firmware Updates

Important Firmware Update Notes

  • Version 2.03 firmware reverts the static bit logic (this bit is located in the Profibus standard diagnostic data, monitored by the Profibus Master), back to the logic that is compatible with firmware versions prior to version 2.02.  This was done for compatibility reasons.  Version 2.02 adds DeviceNet Slave warnings (i.e. a Slave has dropped off of the network) to trigger a status change in the static bit.  Version 2.03 removes the Slave warnings (i.e. this will not trigger a status change) as was the functionality prior to version 2.02.  Pyramid Solutions recommends that version 2.03 be used by customers that have used modules with firmware versions prior to version 2.02 to maintain compatibility.  In the future, this will be added as a configurable setting for the module to allow customers to leave the module in compatibility with previous firmware versions or to include the additional conditions into the static bit logic.
  • Version 2.02 and beyond of the BridgeWay firmware is now compatible with all versions of RSNetworx and NetTool-DN-D. Versions of RSNetworx prior to v7.0 and all versions of NetTool-DN-D as of v3.3.1 do not support ADR data space larger than 64K bytes.  When using early versions of these configuration tools, the BridgeWay will report an ADR limit of 65024 bytes.  The module will be configured correctly by the tools but the amount of ADR data that can be stored, will be limited. RSNetworx v7.0 and later will support the full 128K of ADR data space that is now supported by the AB7603 since Firmware version 2.01.

Other Key Firmware Updates

  • Changed the ADR configuration interface so that it is also compatible with configuration tools that only support up to 64K of ADR data space. See the Important Notes section above for more details.
